How I Turned My Passion into a Thriving Beauty Business—and How You Can Too!

If you had told 18-year-old me that I would one day launch a beauty business, I probably would’ve laughed and then asked if you’d mistaken me for someone else. Growing up a tomboy, the idea of contouring or spending more than five minutes on skincare was about as foreign to me as, well, a good brow shape. But then, I moved to California, where everyone seems to have a PhD in “Looking Flawless 101,” and suddenly, my no-care-what-I-look-like approach got flipped on its head.

Fast forward, and I found myself smack in the middle of the beauty industry—getting my esthetics license, taking late-night classes, and deciding that one day I was going to start a skincare line. Yes, this no makeup wearing, tree hugging hippie queen was about to become a skincare queen.

Of course, “one day” turned into years of exploring different avenues. I dipped my toes into makeup artistry, cosmetic tattooing, massage therapy, and even yoga. (Because, you know, why not add downward dogs into the mix?) But through it all, there was still this nagging feeling that I hadn’t quite found the thing that would light my soul on fire.

Until one day in 2018, while digging through my old journals, I stumbled upon something I’d written years earlier: “Start a Skincare Line.” The words hit me like a (well-hydrated) ton of bricks. I had to ask myself—if not now, when?

The Power of Passion in Business

That was it. My “ah-ha” moment. I rolled up my sleeves, put on my beauty gloves (yes, that’s a thing in my world), and dove headfirst into researching everything about skincare product development. I reached out to manufacturers, annoyed legal advisors with endless questions, and basically lived and breathed everything skincare.

In 2019, I finally launched my first line, KHISH. Did it go perfectly? Nope. I made more mistakes than I care to admit—let’s just say I could’ve filled an entire skincare bottle with my oops moments. But each stumble pushed me closer to the realization that my true passion wasn’t just in creating great skincare products—it was in helping others develop their own brands and bring their visions to life. Because, let’s face it, passion is powerful.

If you’ve ever felt that little spark inside, that burning desire to start your own beauty business or create your product line, then congratulations—you already have the most important ingredient. Now, the key is figuring out how to channel that passion into something real.

Taking the First Step

I know starting can feel like jumping off a cliff into an ocean of beauty products, branding decisions, and “which serum is better?” dilemmas. I’ve been there. But let me tell you, the hardest step is the first one. Once you take it, you’ll realize the water’s not so bad, and heck, you might even swim!

Here’s my tried-and-true method for getting started without losing your cool:

1. Get Clear on Your Vision: What do you want to create? Seriously, get specific. Is it a skincare line, a makeup product, or a brand built on ethical beauty? The clearer you are, the easier everything else becomes.

2. Set Attainable Goals: Don’t try to build Sephora in a day. Set realistic, bite-sized goals with deadlines that don’t make you want to run for the hills. When I started KHISH, I gave myself deadlines for everything from sourcing ingredients to deciding on packaging.

3. Make a Plan: I know it sounds like a total “duh” moment, but writing everything down and actually seeing it on a calendar will work wonders. It turns your dream from “someday” into “right now.”

Just take one small step at a time. Whether it’s researching suppliers, reaching out to manufacturers, or sketching out your branding, every action brings you one step closer to making your dream a reality.

Be her!

Overcoming Obstacles and Self-Doubt

Let me tell you, self-doubt is a sneaky little devil. I had plenty of moments where I wondered, “Who am I to launch a beauty brand?” Imposter syndrome is real, people. But the truth is, you don’t need to be perfect. You just need to start.

I wasn’t a celebrity with a massive marketing budget, and I didn’t have a fancy influencer to push my product. But here’s what I learned: you don’t need all of that to succeed. You just need the courage to take the first step and the perseverance to keep going when things get tough.

One of the best tools I picked up during this whole process was reading inspiring books, like She Means Business by Carrie Green. It helped me clear my mind and build my confidence, and I highly recommend diving into stories of other women who’ve been there and made it to the other side.

And if you’re still feeling like an imposter, remember this: you’re capable of so much more than you think. Start small, learn as you go, and don’t worry if things don’t go perfectly the first time around. Rome wasn’t built in a day—and neither was Rihanna’s Fenty.

What’s Really Holding You Back?

Okay, let’s get real for a minute: What’s stopping you from launching your beauty brand or creating that product line? Is it fear of failure? Lack of confidence? That nagging voice in your head that says, “You’re not ready”?

Spoiler alert: You are ready. Fear is natural, but it doesn’t have to stop you. Once you figure out what’s holding you back, you can start working through it. Set some clear goals, write them down, and take it one step at a time. You don’t need to know everything—that’s why Wild Beauty Society exists.
